What will the classes prepare me for?

Adoption Education Classes online will prepare the prospective adoptive parent to meet the 10 hour of Adoption Educational components often required by adoption agencies in order to comply with the Hague certification which has become mandatory now for most International Adoption cases.

Adoptive parents will learn about common medical, emotional and behavioral problems encountered in some adopted children. We have also added to our syllabus basic parenting skills classes for those who had never had a child of their own.

Our instructional classes are just like attending a live lecture. On one side of the computer screen your instructor will speak to you about various International, and domestic Adoption Medicine topics, while along the other side is the synchronized PowerPoint presentation slide. There are also a resource section where written documentation is cataloged that a student can read and refer back., in order to enhance education.

At the end of the online lecture, there will be a brief quiz. For those who successfully pass the online quiz, a certificate of completion will be awarded.

If a student has a question, there is a online classroom question can be posted and the instructor will try to clarify the problem. Our forums will become an open classroom where other student’s can also post comments and expand on the lectures.

Our teams of physicians, psychologist, and social workers have specifically designed all of our classes, by adhering to the educational requirements and syllabus set forth by the Department of State.
There are also lists of various web sites, articles, and other resources at the end of each course where you can find further information about the topic described in the course.

What Does It Cost?

The cost per credit is $25. The fee includes all courses, down loadable handouts and certificate of completion authorized by our physicians. It also includes e-mail a discussion forum interaction with your instructors. The average class is one credit, but there are number of more complex classes that are of longer duration and they are 2 credit hours, and those classes are $45.

1 Credit Hour Class = $25 per person
2 Credit Hour Class = $45 per person

Each adoptive parent must register individually in order to generate a certificate of completion in his/her name. You may choose any of the classes that you wish to learn about in order to comply with the 10 hours of educational activity.

Who are the instructors?

Our instructors are adoption professionals. We have Physician’s, Psychologist’s, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers and Adoptive Parents. Each class is individually prepared by one of our professionals and caters to a corresponding topic. Classes are designed with the adoptive parent in mind, little to no medical jargon.

Are pre-Adoption educational classes important?

Much like the childbirth and parenting classes that many parents take prior to having their babies, adoptive parents also need to obtain minimal education in order to become a successful parent.
Adoptioneducationclasses.com has created an adoption education portal that caters to these specific parents. We offer the entire required Hague curriculum described by the Department of state, as well as many others general classes in basic baby-parenting skills (diaper changes, formula preparation, etc.) to more advanced topics such as behavioral, emotional and other disciplinary problems.

Changes in adoption, family dynamics our busy lifestyles and the new Hague accreditation process have spurred the growth of many pre-adoption parenting classes outside the agency venue to meet new need. There is no organization to our knowledge that was designed and run by physicians, psychologists and social workers. In the past, agencies provided this education to their clients via classroom settings and agency manuals. While this was a valiant attempt at preparing their new clients for their role as parents, often times this was not enough.

Adoption is a leap of faith, but in order to assure the proper transition to family life for the orphan child, a formal crash course in Adoption Education specifically designed for the busy adoptive parent is crucial. It is only through education that an adoptive parent can learn, understand and be able to recognize potential medical problems that arise in their child before it is too late.

An informed parent is the best advocate for an adoptive child. With proper education we should over time not hear the common phrase that is recited by many unprepared adoptive parents “This is not what I signed on for”. It saddens me when I hear this from people.

Currently, only families adopting through the U.S. foster care system are required to take parenting classes as part of their home study process, and while some private agencies have added this requirement, many agencies and attorneys do not.
In 2007-2008, everyone will be required to attend these classes. The best people to prepare adoptive parents for what lies ahead are the adoption medical professionals themselves. They have seen many cases and have a great deal of professional experience with different aspects of domestic and international adoption.

I do agree that an adoptive mother has a wealth of information to share with the adoptive community. You will see this type of information sharing on different list servers, mailing lists and yahoo groups. Personal experience is very valuable but often times it is also very biased because of personal experience on their adoption.

The professionals at adoptiondoctors.com and Adoptioneducationclasses.com have many such children in our practices with a vast amount of knowledge, experience and stories to share with the entire adoption community.
